Diversity

Hi everyone,

I stumbled upon this video on Youtube. Now please don’t judge it, because it describes diversity in a very simple way. I believe that this is a great measure to explain the concept of diversity to people of every age, even children. For me, acceptance of uniqueness can never start too early, not even for kids.

So what do you think??

Should diversity management only be a responsibility of companies or should our education system already pick up the topic?

Because fact is, diversity issues do not only appear in companies, but also in our everyday live and people should be ready to embrace uniqueness and difference whenever they get an opportunity.

  1. As you already said Juliana, diversity is not just appearing in companies, but as well in our daily life. Therefore I think it should not just been discussed in our working place, because diversity should not be a topic we have to discuss about. As diversity is part of our daily life, we should accept anyone as he/she is, we should not differentiate between men, women, the age, the sexuality or the nationality. Especially nowadays where the world is going globally more and more every day, we should not have to discuss about diversity, it should be part of our lives.

  2. In our university we recently had a guest lecture, the HR manager of TNT Austria. He said what I think is just perfect when talking about diversity on companies. Nowadays some regulations became to be some kind of “in” trends that successful companies should work towards. More than a though that is actually integrated in the cooperate culture of a business or in managers minds.
Coming back to his guest lecture, he was talking manly about diversity in his company. He said diversity in his company is something that naturally developed not something that was one day implemented in the cooperate culture. I think this is what people don’t see. Just hire who has the skills…and diversity would come up all by itself. Then companies would only have to take advantage on this diversity and focus on managing it well. Explanations on how they deal with diversity would come up by simply looking at the working atmosphere at the company every day. They would not need a team of people who looks for the nicest words to describe this “new trend”.

  4. A very nice video, Juliana! I think it shows very well that diversity is often seen as a threat to existing culture and the existing way of doing things. However, it should actually be considered an opportunity because employees from different backgrounds bring with them a lot of different skills and a different way of doing things. This might actually increase the creativity in the organization and new points of view will help the company to move ahaead!
